The video animation “Kosmos” is based on E. M. Forster’s 1928 science fiction short story The Machine Stops. The story depicts a future in which humanity lives in complete dependence on a vast machine that provides for all everyday needs. “Kosmos” continues this narrative, following the protagonist Kuno, who is the sole survivor of the machine’s apocalyptic collapse. The animation follows him on his journey to rebuild a new civilization.

Die Videoanimation „Kosmos“ basiert auf E. M. Forsters Science-Fiction-Kurzgeschichte The Machine Stops aus dem Jahr 1928. Darin wird das Leben einer Menschheit beschrieben, die in vollständiger Abhängigkeit von einer gigantischen Maschine lebt, die sämtliche alltäglichen Bedürfnisse erfüllt.
„Kosmos“ knüpft an diese Erzählung an und führt die Geschichte des Protagonisten Kuno fort, der als Einziger den apokalyptischen Zusammenbruch der Maschine überlebt. Die Erzählung begleitet ihn beim Wiederaufbau einer neuen Zivilisation.
